Isreali internet spy company sets up in Nigeria

Elbits System, an Isreali Electronic Defence firm, has  arrived Abuja to begin the installation of a $40million internet facility...which would spy on the people of Nigeria on behalf of the Nigerian government.

According to Premium Times the internet monitoring company was contracted by the Federal Govt in April this year to install a comprehensive spying facility that will help them monitor its citizens.
The installation will go ahead despite public outcry and an ongoing legislative probe of the project that followed the leak of the contract by this newspaper. The installation is also taking place in complete disregard of the National Assembly which ordered the government to suspend all actions on the contract pending the outcome of a planned investigation." Premium Times reports

The presidency had mulled cancellation of the contract after it summoned Elbit Officials, accusing them of not being discreet enough in the handling of the contract.

The Goodluck Jonathan administration secretly, and in open violation of lawful contracting procedures, awarded the Israeli firm, with headquarters in Haifa, a $40million contract to help it spy on citizens’ computers and Internet communications under the guise of intelligence gathering and national security.

Elbit announced it won the contract back in April, in a global press release, where its general manager, Yehuda Vered, opaquely announced that “Elbit Systems will supply its Wise Intelligence Technology (WiT) system to an unnamed country in Africa under a new $40 million contract … for Intelligence Analysis and Cyber Defense.”

Sources within the administration informed PREMIUM TIMES that the officials arrived Abuja over the weekend (two weekends ago) and had installed the “big brother” device at the headquarters of the National Intelligence Agency in Abuja.

A team of about 20 Nigerian intelligence officers are currently training in Haifa, Israel – headquarters of Elbit Systems – and are expected to run the spying equipment after its installation.

The first batch of the intelligence trainees are due back in the country next week, our sources say.
Elbit says it will take it two years to complete the project, by which time it claimed, the administration will have “a highly advanced end-to-end solution, [to] supports every stage of the intelligence process, including the collection of the data from multiple sources, databases and sensors, processing of the information, supporting intelligence personnel in the analysis and evaluation of the information and disseminating the intelligence to the intended recipient…[that] will be integrated with various data sources, including Elbit Systems’ Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) solution and Elbit Systems’ PC Surveillance Systems (PSS), an advance solution for covert intelligence gathering.”

Police arraigns Fomer Governor on criminal charges

The police in Zamfara State at the weekend filed criminal charges against Senator Yerima Bakura and 29 others at a Zamfara High Court over alleged conspiracy to commit armed robbery. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that counsel to the police, Oloye Torugbene, sought the leave of the court to prosecute the case, pursuant to the Criminal Procedure.

He told the court that all relevant documents, including affidavits, exhibits, names and addresses of accused persons, as well as written statements of witnesses and the accused persons, had been submitted to the court.

He, therefore, urged the court to proffer a criminal charge based on the evidence provided for prosecution.

He said, already, the accused persons who had been served arraignment notice, were released through police administrative bail and pleaded with the court to fix a date for hearing.
The Chief Judge of the state, Justice Kulu Aliyu, said in a ruling that the court was competent to handle the case.

Aliyu urged the prosecutor to serve the accused persons with all the relevant documents and fixed Jan. 13, 2014 for hearing.

The member of the House of Representatives from Gusau/Tsafe,Alhaji Ibrahim Shehu, had, in June, alleged that some people mobilised some thugs to kill him.

He alleged that during the incident, the attackers removed large sum of money from his vehicle.
He reported the case to the Inspector-General of Police, who set up an investigation that led to the court case.

Panel uncovers N84bn Fraud In ASUBEB

Following the judicial panel of enquiry which was set up to probe the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) has discovered gross misappropriation of funds to the tune of N84 billion.

The panel in its report said that between its inception in 1999 and December 2012, ASUBEB has only accounted for N13 billion out of N97 billion it got within the period.

According to the report, the panel could only establish that N13 billion was spent by the board on about 1, 800 capital projects in 13 years while the board could not explain how it used the balance of N84 billion of the N97 billion cumulative funds flowing from the federal government, Abia state government, UBEC, ETF, and UNICEF.

The panel was set up by Governor Theodore Orji on April 15, 2013 following mounting pressure from the general public and it took the panel six months to come up with mind-bugging fraud that had plagued ASUBEB within the time under review.

Also an unconfirmed report has it that the villagers were able to kill two of the attackers with the assistance of some vigilante group, while three of the attackers who made attempt to escape were equally arrested in Damboa Town by some vigilante youth, popularly known as civilian JTF.

Another resident, Malam Yahaya told newsmen that," we have seen what we have never dreamt of it in this village. Close to midnight yesterday, when we had retired to bed, we started hearing some people chanting 'Allahu Akbar' (God is Great). Almost at that time, they began to shoot sporadically, setting ablaze houses, shops and vehicles.

"As I am talking to you now, I'm relocating from this village with my family. I personally lost one of my close uncles in the incident, and I have no reason to stay in this place again. The attackers said they will still come back to wipe out everybody next week". He stated.

One of the victim, Malami, who earlier spoke to our correspondent, said it would take hundreds of troops to confront the terrorists as they were many in number.

However, owing to lack of telecommunication network in Borno which is currently under emergency rule, the Spokesman of the 7 Division, Nigerian Army, Colonel Mohammed Dole and the Police Commissioner, Mr. Lawal Tanko could not be reached. Email messages sent to them were not successful, as no replies have been received prior to the time of this report.
