Borno Govt donates N2m to families of slain teachers

The Borno Government on Tuesday announced a cash donation of N2 million each to the families of the five public school teachers shot dead on Monday by unknown gunmen. Gov. Kashim Shettima made the

announcement when he visited Government Secondary School, Mafoni, one of the affected schools in Maiduguri.

Shettima also promised a N200,000 donation to each of the five teachers who suffered injuries during the attack.

He said the gesture was not meant to compensate for lives of those killed rather a token assistance by the government to cushion the effect of the attacks on the injured victims and the families of the slain.

Shettima also said that government would offset the medical bills of those injured while those critically-injured would be evacuated abroad for better care.

He assured that despite the situation, government would not relent in its efforts to provide sound education for the citizens.

The governor added that the incident would not discourage government from realising its target of ensuring qualitative education to the people.

Earlier, the Principal of the school, Malam Babagana Ali, said the attack was carried out by a group of three men, armed with rifles.

''They stormed the school and fired several shots at the direction of two female teachers.''

He said two teachers died on the spot while the assailants fled the scene before the arrival of the Joint Task Force (JTF).

Other schools affected include Sanda Kyarimi Secondary School and Government Secondary School, Galadima.
