Angered by the bill before the state Assembly, advocating for the ban of street begging, physically challenged persons embarked on a peaceful protest in Kano,Wednesday, demanding that the bill be squashed.
The protesters who were seen, chanting Allahu Akbar, took over the street of Kano as they moved in group to the state High Court, from where they headed for the state House of Assembly.
Kano's city centres were dotted with beggers, who now faced a back lash from islamic clerics repeatedly claim begging is anti-islam.
The bill prohibiting street begging in Kano has been passed into law by the state House of Assembly and barring any last minute change, Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is set to append his signature before the week runs out. The bill among other things stipulates N10,000 fine for violators.
A letter submitted by the protesting beggars to the State Assembly titled "Request for the reconsideration of the bill that bans street begging" and obtained by Newsmen argued that "there is need for the establishment of a Disable Persons Commission in Kano to cater for the need of persons with disabilities".
The association further called on the Kano state Government to also consider the rights stipulated by the United Nations such as the right to life, equality and non discrimination amongst others.
