Unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect yesterday in Kaduna shot dead a police officer and took away his rifle along Western By-Pass Express after they laid an ambush on scores
of police officers as they made their way to duty posts in the city. The attack came a week after a team of the state security outfit, Operation Yaki, came under attack from gunmen in Tudun Wada area of the city.
A source said the incident happened at Ungwan Muazu, the same area rocked by two bomb explosions last year.
"The policemen were passing on their way to commercial banks along the express, when the men appeared on bike shot him several times. They instantly killed and took his gun away. I saw his body, it was mutilated and ridden with bullets." stated police source.
The particular Officer, according to source was almost close to his destination of his duty post for the night at an Ecobank branch, which was about 300 meters to the bank when the sect struck.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Olufemi Adenaike, who confirmed the two incidents, said Sunday's attack was carried out by gunmen on a motorcycle, who killed the police officer and took away his gun.
He said that the command would investigate the incident as the policeman was supposed to be on duty elsewhere as at the time of the shooting.
On the attack of Operation Yaki personnel in Tudun Wada, Adenaike said they were also shot at by gunmen on motorbikes while on patrol.
The police commissioner said no life was lost in the incident but that some of the officers were injured.
Adenaike said no arrest had been made but assured that the perpetrators would be brought to book.
The commissioner urged the public to continue to assist security agents with useful information that would sustain existing peace in the state.
